Third Draft of Music Video

I recently partook in a focus group where I exhibited the video above and I received the following feedback:

  • Overall a successful video, that had some really nice moments
  • Great video
  • Your star looks really good
  • I loved the CCTV footage, it looked really realistic

When asked about what they thought was least successful they responded by saying:
  • I didn't like the shot of the eyes fluttering, it was quite off-putting
  • The colouring of the video is quite bland in places, perhaps you could colour correct it, to make it more brighter.

First Draft of Music Video

Here is my very draft of my upcoming music video, as you'll see it is far from completion. I do still have gaps where more of the narrative elements will be placed. I will be trying to get some feedback of this to see if there is anything I can improve throughtout the editing stage. I do feel that without the main narrative scenes in the video, it is nowhere near up to par with my expectations, therefore I will still be making adjustments to make sure, it looks professional.

Editing Process

For the scene where my artist is at a party I had to use the tool 'image mask' as I filmed her and the people dancing in the back ground separately. I simply placed the footage of her on top of the dancers on my timeline, went onto 'image mask' and cropped the image by removing the sides so it looks like they were at the same place. I chose to do this because I wanted to slow the dancers down to show that although she's physically there, mental she's somewhere else as the line at this point says "fooling everyone, telling them she's having fun" suggesting that she's been to so many parties that there not even fun for her anymore.

Below is a screenshot of myself saving my footage into my documents before I encoded them in the Adobe Encoder programme. This is crucial in the editing process because unencoded footage takes forever to render on Final Cut so this is good to help save time later on.

For this particular clip I wanted my artists inner turmoil to relate to the audience which is why  I decided to add the echo effect to her which basically delays her movements, which gives the impression that there are loads of copies of her when she moves. This looked really effective in the video and is a common effect used in most music videos.

Behind the scenes

Below is a video of myself and a few others filming for my music video.

Heres a video compiling of the making of the performance footage I took in my school's stage classroom. This will give you an exclusive insight into to how I filmed this particular scene.

Time Lapse

Here is the time lapse I took from the roof of my house, this in particular took a lot of patience and a lot of attempts at it as the first time lapse I took was completely out of focus. Moreover, due to the English weather not being reliable, there were times when I went to  Primrose Hill in Camden and although the weather said clear sunny skies there was an overcast which made my footage look really grainy, therefore unusable. On my third try my battery died just before sunset and my on my forth try, the wind was really unbearable and just wasn't practical for me to film.

How will I use Goodwin's elements within my video?

I will have frequent references to the notion of looking and I will show the voyeuristic treatment of the female body by showing my artist looking at herself in the mirror and using close ups of the zip of her dress when she is changing. The notion of looking includes men or women being portrayed seductively or if there is eye contact with the camera, this will feature heavily in my video as it is quite a sultry song and my artist will be quite a seductive and alluring character in parts of the video. My video will acquire the notion of looking as it references the use of props. e.g. Mirrors and cameras.

There is a succinct relationship between music and visuals. e.g. either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting this will feature in my video as I'm basing my narrative on a girl telling the audience her life story, therefore illustration and amplification will be key.

Record companies tends to have certain demands for their artist and my record label isn't any different. They often include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist will have a visual style which recurs across their work. The “4th wall” will be broken in my video because there will elements of performance, which is a direct address to the audience.

Dancing Animals Edit

The task set was to create a music video from the dancing tiger and shark footage. I had to find the track to accompany it, choose from the available shots and then edit the video by adding effects. This was good task because:

  • I  re-familiarised myself with Final Cut
  • Learnt how important cutting to the beat is "MTV style Editing"- Vernalis
  • Learnt how to edit to the beat by using markers
  • Through the editing I was able to create a narrative
